Making Artificial Flowers – A Very Easy And Simple Process

By Sarah H There are many types of artificial flowers including those made from glass, paper, porcelain and plastic, just to name a few, but the most popular artificial flowers are made from silk. All petals are made from white silk cotton and rayon fabric, regardless the finished colour. The fabric is die-cut into many petal shapes and sizes for one single type of flower. In the first process the petals are dyed using cotton balls and paint brushes to touch colour onto the petals beginning from the edge of the petal working towards the center. The dyeing of one petal can take up to an hour of concentrated work. The next step is to give the petal their distinctive look, with wrinkles, curves lines and other sorts of shapes needed to create a real and live look. The petals are then placed into molds where heat is then applied to press them into there unique and individual shapes. After these petals are pressed, some of them are stiffened with the use of very thin wire, which is covered with floral tape to hide the actual wires. The wires are inserted into the petals by hand and glue is pasted on to keep the wires in place. After this is done the petals are made into flowers by the use of glue or by running a wire through them to give them the desired shape. The separate flowers and spread of leaves are each assembled individually but several of them may be joined together to create one single stem. Another process of the work is to take wire precuts of specific lengths and properly cover the entire length of wire with floral paper or with waxed coated tape to make it self sticking. And finally the assembler has to take the individual flowers and the set of sprays of leaves to the stem to complete each flower. This is the last and final step in the artificial flower making process. All of the completed flowers are then taken to the packing department. Each flower stem is wrapped in floral paper and then the flowers are placed into boxes as if they are real flower bouquets that are to be delivered. These boxes are then sealed and stored for shipment. Artificial flowers are also made by individuals who like this sort of thing as a hobby. Their method is much simpler that the manufactured products and some of their finished products can be quite impressive. They acquire the necessary materials from their local craft shops, such as a clear fast drying glue, scissors, wire, wire cutters, floral tape, paint brushes and craft paints. They also have to purchase the materials with which the flower is going to be made, such as paper, stockings, or cloth; some even use dry flowers and berries to use in their creations. After collecting all the necessary materials, they then create a mold of the flower they would like to make with a stencil or some such tool, after which each petal has to be made individually and colored and then they are joined by a wire stem which is covered in floral tape. The petals are not as intricate as the manufactured products and instead of placing wire in the petals they just usually draw the outlines of them onto the petals before painting. Bully Victims Need a Healthy Relationship with an Adult

By Paula McCoach Bully Victims Need a Healthy Relationship with an Adult! So Do the Bullies! By Paula McCoach, School Counselor Boys will be boys and Girls just do that is what we hear from so many people. As a kid myself, I remember getting teased and no one came to help or told me what to do. And, you know what? It hurt me then as much as it hurts kids today. As a school counselor for 10 years, I have developed and tested various techniques for helping students in dealing with bullying. These programs will help the bullies too! One of the most effective programs I have developed is a staff to student mentor program. This is a school-based program with the professional staff as mentors to students during the school day. Mentors are teachers, administrators, and guidance counselors. The program takes place in school only and mentors do not transport, visit or meet their mentee outside of the school setting. Parents are involved through phone calls, notes home and conferences with the mentor/staff member. The effectiveness of this program has been astounding. Students have an opportunity to form a healthy relationship with a professional adult who can assist them on a regular basis and support them in dealing with bullies among other things. Through the confidence and skills the students gain through the relationship with their mentor, they develop skills to deal with bullying and teasing. The bullies themselves are also part of the mentor/mentee program and work with staff to learn to treat other students with respect. Several mentors, through daily contact with their mentee via checklists, short conversations, etc. has greatly reduced the negative effect these bullies have on other students. This has also supported these former bullies to focus on building their own self-confidence, which enables them to be better students and people. The decreased number of office referrals from the students who have been doing the bullying will also encourage your school administrators to support your new mentoring program as well as enable you to obtain grant money to enhance your program. Our mentor/mentee program rocks! As coordinator, I monitor these relationships and provide activities to the mentors to do with their mentees. These activities are about relationship and trust building as well as self-esteem building. Since its inception, the mentor/mentee program has focused on the most basic concerns of schools grades, behavior and attendance!! Activities are also provided for this goal also. Mentors are free to create the relationship with their mentee as they see fit. The activities are optional and only to be used as a guide. For some ideas on amazing activities, send an email to coach@bullyzapper.com You will receive a series of mentor/mentee activities in your email box for the next several days. Use them to assist your mentors in developing their initial relationship with their mentees! Have a bully-free day! Paula McCoach has been in public education for 23 years. She has been a school counselor for the past 10 in an alternative school and an elementary/middle school in Maryland. She has spearheaded mentor programs, Character Education initiatives, & Bully awareness. Teenage Gambling At Post Prom High School Party

By Howard Keith The latest trend to hit high schools is supervised teenage gambling at the Post Prom School Party. Over the past few months I have received numerous emails from parents, students and school faculty expressing concern about the new alternative entertainment. In all cases these people believe it would do more harm then good. The concept became reality for students once the Post Prom Committee voted to accept this new alternative entertainment. This Post Prom Committee believes this is safe night party for the High School prom. The students who are taking part are between the ages of sixteen and eighteen years old. Each student is able to purchase fake money to gamble with and at the end of the night they can trade this money in for prizes with at the end of the night. Some parents believe this is a safe wonderful event for their children. While others believe this is one area they prefer their kids not be involved with. One of the emails I received was from a family who home schools their five children. I was surprised since their kids were not involved. She had explained to me that her daughter who is seventeen has friends who attend the public school system. She went on to tell me the negative behavior exhibited by these teens after the event took place. In fact they taught her daughter how to play black jack and poker. This is a good neighborhood that has strong community ties. She also informed me that she not see the difference between using fake money or real money when you still have a chance to win a prize that has value. She believes these teens are being educated on how to gamble, win and take the easy way out. People in favor of this gambling event, nicely told those who were against it to have their teenagers stay home. It was my understanding the post prom parties were supposed to be for everyone. It surprised me that a school district finds gambling night an acceptable behavior for our teenagers. I have seen first hand the self destruction gambling can do to teenagers and adults. Its my belief that gambling should be limited to people who are eighteen and over. Another email was asking me for the specific statistics on the negative impact on a teenagers who attend a gambling event. General statistics reflect a percentage of those in attendance will develop a compulsive gambling addiction. Some of these same students may become addicted at some point in their life. I have found that addictions to gambling are not age sensitive. People of any age who are gambling for the very first time can develop a gambling addiction. Usually a friend or family member takes them to the gambling establishment. I first found it difficult to understand how a person who is sixty five retired and on a fixed income gets addicted to gambling. The seniors I spoke with were very upset and didnt understand how this happened to them. The unfortunate part is they lost their pensions and now only have their Social Security to live on. In one case the Grandmother has to move in with her daughter. There is very little difference between supervised gambling and allowing supervised drinking alcoholic beverages or serving the students there choice of dugs on a silver platter. If a Principal served a student an alcoholic drink he would be arrested. I am trying to understand how school educators and parents can distinguish between alcohol and gambling on school property. How is one more acceptable then the other? Studies have shown that there is a correlation between alcohol addiction and gambling addiction. The correlation was based on individuals who attend both Gamblers Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. It would be a shame to find out ten years from now that students who took part in supervised gambling at the High School level their future was compromised by a life of self destruction and low self esteem. Its a proven statistics that students who gamble get a similar rush as if they just had an alcoholic beverage. The only difference here they will not wake up with a hang over and the side effects are minimal until its too late. We have now given our students another option in life. The major concern is the students will probably like the rush from gambling a lot more then alcohol and or drugs since there is no hang over or smell. Some students are likely to continue gambling. Students with A grades are not exempt from this. Statistics show that compulsive teenage gamblers are also very bright and articulate individuals. People need to be educated on teenage gambling and its long term affects. Its illegal to gamble if you are under 18. Its also illegal to drink if you are under 18 (some places 21) and its illegal to smoke cigarettes if you are under 18. These laws were set for a reason. Another email I received wanted to know do these school systems have any respect for the Law? I emailed each of the people and asked why havent they raised their concerns to the school board? They all responded the same. We are the minority and now we look bad in front of our kids. This is truly a no win situation. The parents who are against this sort of entertainment believe; if just one student develops a compulsive gambling addiction that is one too many. For more information on Stop Teenage Gambling Website http://www.teenage-gambling-addiction.org/ and I Stopped Gambling So Can You http://www.istoppedgambling.com/. Mr. Howard Keith has an extensive background in dealing with compulsive gamblers, relatives and friends of gamblers and teenage gamblers. Mr. Keith believes there are many alternatives to aid in the recovery of a gambling addiction verses a twelve step program. A large percentage of his emails were from compulsive gamblers looking for an alternative to Gamblers Anonymous and twelve step programs. Gamblers Anonymous also helps a significant number of people each year but there is a large percentage that they are unable to reach. Don’t Fake It Until You Make It

By Dave Lorenzo Fake it till you make it. This is a tag line that one of my former bosses was quite fond of. She would regularly represent our business as having capabilities that exceeded our ability to deliver. She never outright lied in her marketing efforts. She simply positioned us as a different kind of company one that she thought our customers wanted to do business with. In the end she was setting us up for failure. Your brand positioning should be based upon your capability to deliver. This is as true for your personal brand as it is for a business brand. One of the key components in positioning yourself is determining who you want to attract as a customer. Ultimately, your brand is the sum of your customers perceptions of you. In order to influence the perception of your potential clients, you must achieve a high level of self-awareness. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you develop your brand: You are what you are. Anytime you represent yourself to be something that you are not, you run the risk of losing a customer forever. You need to position yourself as different and valuable. Those qualities must be your own. You must be honest with your customers and with yourself. Consistency is important. Regardless of the business you are in, your customers must be able to count on you. If you want to impress your customer, dont complete an assignment early one time beat your deadline every time. Your client will know that you are the firm to call if she must have a critical project completed on time. Dont count on getting a second chance. First impressions are critical. You cant take back something you said to a customer. Everything is on the record. You should be yourself, but always remember that your reputation takes a lifetime to build and just a few minutes to destroy. Be Clear and Concise. Too many people use complex language in order to appear intelligent and just wind up confusing people. Often, complexity makes the speaker seem pompous and condescending. Keep every interaction and every point of contact clear and simple. Be transparent. Communicate simply and directly. Show, dont tell. If you explain a concept to a customer, he may understand it intellectually. But, if you tell him a story, show him a picture, or perform a demonstration, he will make an emotional connection to the event, to the experience, and to you. The more of his senses you can involve, the stronger the impression you will make. The key word here is impression. Make an impact or youll fade like a distant memory. Ultimately honesty wins out in marketing. Powerful brands deliver on their brand promise every time. Faking it is one way to seriously hurt your chances of making it in the real world. Non Prescription Eye Contacts

By Damian Sofsian Non-prescription contact lenses are not meant for vision correction; they are called plano. Opaque color contacts are the most common non-prescription contacts. Though these lenses do not need a prescription, users must consult an eye care professional for the right fit. There is a wide variety of non-prescription contacts available in the market. There are lenses that simply enhance ones natural eye color. There are also contacts to satisfy every whim and fancy. The lenses have names like flame, alien and cats eye. It would appear that there is a non-prescription contact lens to suit every flight of fancy. Occasions like Halloween boost the demand for such lenses. The user can choose between disposable and daily-wear lenses. Disposable lenses may be a better choice if the user plans to change colors frequently. These are the right choice when you use non-prescription color contacts only occasionally. There is no need to clean these lenses, and you can just throw them away after using them for a few days. Daily wear lenses are more appropriate if the contacts are to be used more often. These will last longer, but need regular cleaning and disinfection. Many doctors advise against the use of non-prescription contacts without a doctors supervision. They warn that when a doctor does not monitor fitting, usage, and physiological effects, the contacts may cause serious damage or even blindness. When people buy non-prescription contacts over the counter without bothering to consult an eye care professional, they tend to forget that contacts are not for everyone. The shape of the eye, the amount of tearing and the need for correction vary from person to person. Only a careful examination by a professional can ensure the right contacts for the right eyes. All users must be mature enough to take proper care of the lenses. Diabetics need to take extra care, as infections may take a long time to heal. Deck Swing Buying and Assembling Tips

By John Morris Putting a swing on your porch or deck will definitely add elegance to it. Not only that, but family and friends will be able to enjoy your porch more when you install a swing, because after all, a porch or deck with a swing in it is a lot more interesting than a bare one. Having a swing, your porch or deck will instantly become a favorite gathering place. If you think installing a swing in your porch or deck is difficult, think again. Adding a swing to your porch or deck can be a breeze if you follow the step by step instructions below. 1. The right swing must be placed properly in the place. The first thing you should do before buying a swing set is to measure the height of your porch or the a place in the garden for the chains used for support and the width to ensure crash and bump free swinging. 2. Purchase a hanging kit along with the swing. Ensure that it has all the necessary galvanized items and chain for heavy-duty purposes that you will need for the particular swing that you bought. Read the directions well when you are buying your hanging kit. Ensure you have all the necessary tools, and if not, prepare a list of items you will need and make a trip to the hardware store. 3. Look for an overhead beam with an 8-foot clearance under it in your porch or deck. This is where you will install the two hooks for the swing that should be given space the width of the swing to support the chains. To prevent the splitting of the wood upon screwing in the big hooks that are useful in holding the swing safely, drill pilot holes first. 4. Choose a swing set that requires minimal assembly. First take all the parts out of the box. Find the package of nuts and bolts then set it aside. Look for the instructions booklet and read it carefully. To avoid confusion, lay out all of the parts on the ground the way they will eventually connect in the finished assembly. If there are any ground coverings or mats lay them also on the ground. Get some help holding the pieces as you assemble them or use a small bucket or tupperware container to ensure none of the smaller pieces get lost. Assembling Your Swing: 1. Look for the long poles that will form the swings frame. Connect two of the three poles at the end to form an acute angle with the nuts and bolts provided. Connect the second set of two uprights the same way. Also connect any braces included onto the uprights. The braces should attach about halfway along the uprights. 2. There are basically two types of swings, those with holes in the arms and those that come with mounted chains that are attached to the swing’s lower frame. The former is easy to hang but the latter can be more comfortable to sit on. 3. Preserve your swing before hanging by using a sanding sealer under a varnish with polyurethane. Annually check for splinters and reseal if needed. 4. Look for the crosspiece which is usually the largest piece of metal or a long wooden beam. Connect this to the apex of each set of uprights making sure that any holes or hooks face the right way so that it will be possible to attach the swing correctly. 5. When everything is in its place tighten the bolts and stand the swing set on its feet. Get the chains or rope for use to hanging the swing. Using a stepladder, attach the chains to the crosspiece. Hooks should be provided with the swing set. The swing seat should be attached to the hanging chain. Measure each side so the swing hangs evenly. 6. You will need four chains to hang the swing from its hooks. The first two chains will descend from each hook, one to the front of the swing and one to the back. The chains must at least be seven feet long because it will hang from a beam that is 8 feet above. The swing must be not more than 17 inches from the ground so it is easy for individuals to get on and off. 7. For safety, all hardware must be screwed securely into the wood and chain connectors must be used. Before hanging the swing, double check that all hardware is installed. 8. Use a frame if you have any doubt that your porch can support your swing. Do not hang swings from masonry or bricks. 9. It is better if you use bolts instead of screws. 10. It is highly suggested that you drill through the support beam to put a long eye bolt through it, then secure it with a large flat washer and locking bolt. 11.Ask a friend for help or use an ironing board for support when you lift the swing and its harness near the beam. After hooking the swing in place, adjust the chains evenly then get on the swing to test it. Now you are ready to show off your new swing to your friends and family! Raleigh Laser Hair Removal Expert Provides Guidelines on Choosing a Laser for Hair Removal

By Kile Law Laser hair removal has come a long way since the first laser for hair removal received FDA clearance in the mid 1990s. Older generation lasers were slow, very painful and worked only on individuals with very dark hair and very light skin. Today, lasers can work on all skin colors and some lasers are even safe for treating tanned skinned. When considering a hair removal laser treatment, consumers should ask the following questions: 1) Is this laser FDA approved for hair removal on my skin type and hair color? There are several lasers for hair removal available. No one laser is ideal for every individual. Depending on your skin color and hair color, some lasers will be more effective than others. The Ruby Laser: This is the “original ” hair removal laser. Its deep red color at 694nm is very well absorbed by the melanin pigment in hair, making it an excellent choice for fine and light hair. However, because melanin is present in the skin as well, the Ruby laser cannot be used on patients with skin that is not very light, including tanned skin. Because of this limitation, slow repetition rate, and relatively small spot size, Ruby lasers have become less popular for laser hair removal in recent years. The Alexandrite Laser: This laser produces reddish light. With its large (up to 18mm) spot size and high repetition rate, the Alexandrite laser is the fastest hair removal laser, and is suitable for rapid treatment of large body areas in patient with light to olive complexion. An entire back can be treated in less than 30 minutes. The Diode Laser: This laser, consists of a high power laser diode emitting infrared (invisible) light at ~800-808nm. The longer wavelength allows deep penetration into the skin and safety for darker skin types, but with less efficacy for lighter and finer hair. The long pulse Nd:YAG: This laser can be used on all skin types, including tanned skin. Large spot sizes and fast repetition rates allow large areas to be treated quickly. Disadvantages include more discomfort during treatment and less effective clearance for fine and light hairs than the other hair removal lasers. IPL devices are not lasers, because they emit non-coherent light of many different wavelengths. However, because most of the light energy is in the shorter wavelengths, treatment of darker skin types is less effective than with the appropriate laser. 2) What is the spot size of the laser? A larger spot size offers not only the advantage of faster treatment, but also additional safety and efficacy. As spot size increases, a lower percentage of the delivered light energy scatters outside of the treatment area, increasing the depth of pentration, and allowing a lower energy setting to be used for treatment. 3) What type of cooling system is the laser equipped with? It is important that a laser have consistent cooling in order to ensure patient safety and comfort. 4) Is there a board-certified physician on site? Although complications with new lasers for hair removal are rare, in the event of a complication, you need to know who will provide medical attention. 5) Are treatments sold in a package or one at a time? Because every person will respond at a slightly different rate, and some individuals will require more treatments than others for complete clearance, most laser centers will offer individual sessions. 6) Are complimentary consultations and spot tests available? You should be able to meet the technician and experience a pulse or two before committing to a treatment. A Collector’s Guide to Buying Vintage Watches

By Desmond Guilfoyle Collecting vintage watches is a growing hobby in most parts of the western world. Men, particularly, are attracted by the romance and novelty of having a micro-engine on their wrist as both a time-teller and an image statement. One of the most frustrating aspects of collecting vintage watches is the number of fakes, frankenwatches and fraudsters one encounters in pursuit of this noble, but increasingly costly, passion. The comeback of the mechanical watch has drawn out all sorts of insects from under their rocks. The pursuit of one’s passion for old timepieces will inevitably lead to numerous encounters with rogue repairers who charge house prices for inferior work, linear decendents of horse theives who palm off fakes as the real thing, Doctor Frankensteins who create sought-after models from parts of other watches, the usual bevy of shonks, crooks and tricksters out to convince the gullible and the unwary to swipe their well worn credit cards. In a recent seven day survey and follow-up I completed on the listing of vintage Omega Constellation watches on a major on-line trading site, more than 50 percent of all listings were of watches that were inauthentic in some way – that gives you some idea of what collectors are up against. Caveat Emptor, rarity and product knowledge steer the purchasing behaviours of astute collectors in any collecting field and these three principles are particularly important when purchasing vintage watches on-line and through bricks and mortar dealers. Frankenwatches describe the practice of taking parts from different watches of the same calibre series and ‘creating’ a new or better pedigree of movement. In some countries of Europe they are called ‘Wedding’ watches. This practice is especially prevalent in middle and higher end timepieces that are most sought-after by collectors. In tandem with the obvious deception of Frankenwatches, there are a number of other intentional and inadvertent frauds that occur: 1. Housing a different movement in a genuine case or re-dialed model. If you are interested in collecting a particlar brand of watch, get to know the calibre numbers of movements that power particular models. Calibre numbers are different to serial numbers and can best be described as the engine type(similar to cars: eg. 2.5-litre DOHC V6 describing the engine in a current X Type Jaguar). Some calibres of a particular brand are more collectible than others, so it pays to know what’s under the bonnet. 2. Using a similar movement series and replacing the part that has the calibre number. This is prevalent in watch brands that have numerous models and where the top line models fetch higher prices that the cheaper models. Often you can tell a fraud of this type through colouration contrasts or newness of the parts that contains the calibre number. 3. Placing a high end dial and movement in the wrong case. Many of the higher end vintage watches have case back numbers that can be checked with serial numbers to see if they match. 4. Replacing worn hands and crowns with non-genuine hands and crowns and claiming the watch is 100 percent authentic. A common problem with many vintage models that reduces the value of the watch. Before buying, build up a library of pictures of watches that you know are genuine and match a prospective purchase against them. On-line forums are a great way to acquire and swap pictures. 5. Badly executed dials and re-dials. Ask for super-sized pictures so you can examine the quality of the printing and also the placement of lettering. A bad re-dial will wipe as much as 30 percent off the value of the watch. Again pictures and the help of other collectors is invaluable in making sure you have an authentic watch. 6. Replacing numerous worn parts in a genuine models with genuine parts. While this is a perfectly acceptable practice, it does indicate that at some stage in the life of the movement it was neglected or damaged. Knowledgeable and pernickety collectors look for signs of colour variation on the movement and often avoid watches that are not of one colour hue. Look for scratches or gouges on the non-replaced parts, and look for corrosion or other signs of wear and tear. Ask the vendor for a detailed report on the history of servicing of the watch and its current condition. If the vendor cannot supply such information it is better to let the watch go rather than experience the disappointment of acquiring a watch that has suffered abuse in the past and having to deal with the ongoing symptoms of that abuse. 7. Claiming an old warrior is a handsome prince. Many vendors use descriptions like ‘minty’, ’100% authentic’, ‘very clean’, ‘this one is a keeper’, and so on. Most of these descriptions are useless if not backed up by evidence. When examining a good quality picture of the watch movement, and always ask for pictures if you are buying on the internet, look for any discolouration of the surfaces of plates and bridges. Look for any signs of corrosion or parts of the watch that do not match in colour, particularly rotor bridges and the part of the watch that contains the calibre or serial numbers. Look for new additions that show themselves by their shininess. These are all indicators of inauthenticity, parts swapping or at least major repairs. 8. Examine the movement for burred screw heads and scrapes and damage to the movement plates or bridges, which are sure signs of inexpert work, or at least indicate the movement was separate from the case for some time before a case was found to match. Checks for surface discoloration on the movement plates, blotches, corrosion, or parts that don’t match the rest of the movement patina. 9. Examine the case back to determine whether the watch has had a hard life. Beware of excessive polishing that takes the sharpness away from the edges of the watch case, as that again indicates considerable wear and tear overall and devalues the watch. 10. A watch that has obviously had a hard life indicates carelessness towards its maintenance and irregularity in servicing. Generally speaking, mechanical watches should be serviced every three to five years, and it is not difficult to detect a watch that has been neglected because the signs of neglect are obvious to the naked eye. Badly discoloured watches with scratches, gouges to the movement, highly polished case backs and inexpertly refinished dials are sure signs of the amateur watchmaker at work and should be avoided. They can also point to a tired old movement jazzed up for sale and marketed with great hyperbole to the unwary Internet shopper. 11. Look carefully at the dial to see if screws have caused minor or major indentations on the dial. This indicates that incorrect or inauthentic screws have been used in the movement. Look for corrosion on the dial or flakes that have come off the dial. This can indicate that a watch has spent some or all of its life in the tropics and was not serviced as regularly as it should have been. It can also indicate immersion in water. Watches that are regularly serviced will have their seals replaced at service and should show few signs of moisture having entered the case. Remember rust under a dial cannot be seen and flaky dials can be a sign of hidden problems underneath. 12. Rust cannot generally be removed from watches and at best can be neutralised. A sure sign of neglect is corrosion on or near the threads of the case back or the area where the case back meets the case. These are signs of irregular servicing and signify the possibility of excessive wear of the movement. Watch collecting is a rewarding past-time for thousands of collectors worldwide. Fortunately they congregate in various forums on the Internet and are generally very happy to share their knowledge and passion for particular brands. Build up and use your knowledge to better determine the value of the watches you collect. An evenly coloured movement, retaining much of its original sheen and showing signs of regular service demands a higher price and improves its value far better than a poor cousin that has been through the wars. Cross Stitch Materials and Preparation

By Laura Anne Grey Find out what cross stitch materials and preparation you need to get started stitching. Preparation You should always cut the fabric you are going to stitch onto at least 8-10 cm larger than the finished size of the design, this will allow you to turn up a seam, or to mount your work or make it into a gift. If you are making a garment with a cross stitch design you should mark out the pattern of the garment onto the fabric before you start stitching to ensure you place it correctly. To prevent the fabric from fraying you can either turn over the edge and machine stitch it or bind it using tape. I find masking tape good for this job. You should always start stitching from the center of the fabric. Fold the fabric in half one way and then the other way to find the center point. Separate your threads – If you are working from a kit the thread for the project will likely be supplied. You should separate and mark the colours before you start to make sure you identify each colour correctly. A floss organizer is very handy for this job and you can pick one up for only a few dollars these days. Equipment Very little equipment is actually needed for cross stitch. If you are working from a kit the fabric, needle and threads will most likely be supplied. You will need an embroidery hoop or frame to mount the fabric on. Take a look at the cross stitch materials information below: Hoops and Frames If you mount the cross stitch fabric on a hoop or frame your work will be easier to handle and stitches will be kept flat and smooth. You should choose a frame that accommodates the whole design so you don’t have to fold or bend the fabric. If you bind the outer ring of an embroidery hoop with white bias tape it will prevent it from marking the fabric and prevent slipping. Needles You should stitch your design using a tapestry needle which has a large eye and a blunt end to prevent damage to the fabric. Choose a size of needles that slides easily through the holes of the fabric without distorting or enlarging them. Scissors A sharp pair of embroidery or sewing sissors will make you floss cuts neat and tidy. Thimble A thimble will help stop your finger hurting. Threads Cross stitch designs are worked with floss thread. These come in many colours and clever use of colour creates wonderful cross stitch pieces. Fabric The Majority of cross stitch is worked on Aida fabric which comes in several sizes. The most popular size is 14 count which means there are 14 threads to 1 inch.
